When I was younger, my photos were geared towards the Instagram aesthetic – meaning that yes, I was one of those people that really took their time in what they posted on Instagram; edits and all. I don’t want to say that my photos were “good”. Rather, the scale/subject of things that I was photographing were grand. And they were shot with the purpose of contributing to the social media photography hive-mind.

It wasn’t always about getting approval and there were alot of people who shot for the sake of beautiful pictures. I immensely enjoyed shooting and editing. These are skills I’ve taken with me up to the present day.

These past few years though, I have slowly come to see that my photos – while still following technical photography rules – are drastically smaller in subject scale. They are more intimate, close-up portraits that make up the tapestry of my life..

I don’t take photos with that grand, sweeping Instagram aesthetic in mind anymore. My photos now are a reflection of the peace and quiet I spent a lifetime searching for.

This also makes me viscerally aware of the inverse relationship to the Instagram aesthetic. Sometimes, it takes seeing or experiencing the opposite of what really matters to you to make you realize the value of the things that do matter in your life.

That being said, it is a constant humming thought in my head these days that I have to protect this measure of peace I have now. A future must never occur in which my photos have a grander set of subjects and scale or context. My life must gracefully wind down with an unending line of natural photos or video (vidjya lol) resonating a quiet, dignified gratitude for everything my eyes and lenses witness.

Because if my photos become Instagram-aesthetic again, it’s an indicator of a life I absolutely do not want.

That’s wonderful that you know what you want and what you don’t need. Most people I encounter are still trying to figure out who they are and what they want.
You’re in a great spot in life! 🤍

I totally agree! It’s difficult to find nice acquaintances/friends as an adult. So this has been such a huge blessing to me. Thank you for being you. 🙏🏽

Mike, this is such a thoughtful reflection! 📸✨ I really appreciate how you describe photography not as a performance for approval, but as a quiet witness to the peace you’ve worked so hard to find.

There’s something deeply beautiful about choosing smaller, more intimate moments over grand aesthetics — because those simple, natural glimpses often hold the most gratitude and truth. Wishing you continued peace, creativity, and a life filled with images that reflect the calm your soul deserves! 🙏🌿

thank you Betty! and i also wish the same for you. you strike me through your beautiful writings as a person that has found that same measure of peace. may you continue being blessed!

As long as you photograph with your creative endeavors in mind rather than be at the beck and call of the almighty algorithm, I say photograph what, and how, you want.

I cut clutter out of my images *some* of the time because it irritates ME. Other times, the clutter tells a story, or is the undercurrent of a broader story. 🤷

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

yes, the message really does matter first and foremost. the fact that algorithm had become the type of catch-all word it did in the broader lexicon is amazing to me and speaks to how much social media has really nested into our lives.

also, for the clutter I have a similar sense. i’ll leave it in there for texture and undercurrent, like you say and will mitigate it if it doesn’t help the image.

A lovely way to put it Mike. Being yourself toward your subjects is the key.🙂

thank you Arlene! and that interplay feeds back into the soul – you give it your best and it gives its best back to you 🙂

Nah, my photos aren’t Instagram aesthetic, but I enjoyed that moment capturing them. That’s what matters to me not the grandeur. If there is someone who enjoys it other than me, it’s good,

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

that’s a great attitude about it Hazel. and yes, I absolutely love and enjoy the photos you take!

      1. Hazel Avatar

        Thanks a lot, Kuya Mike!

And if there is none, but just me, still the purpose is there.🤩🤭 I hit send before finishing my comment.😁 I love your thoughts today, Kuya Mike. Yeahhhh, vidjya 😂

Mike, I think for serious photographers like you, being an observer I’ve realized what and how you see behind the lens is unusual too. You’re able to tell stories through a photo, it’s not just the aesthetics and appearance. With some photos I can say it’s beautiful but there are those that evokes emotions.
The peace and simplicity you capture can be felt. I’m so glad that what moves you translates through the screen and you spread it around.

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

thank you Iba. I am also glad that I don’t have to take photos of amazing things in order for it to resonate with you and everyone here. that you enjoy it is what makes me want to search out more natural aesthetics to capture and share. after all, you also share things from your life there and I am thrilled to witness it!

      1. ibarynt Avatar

I wish I step out more and take photos. But when I do I forget. And my photography abilities are a walking disaster 😁. Festival season is beginning, hopefully I’d be able to share some of those.

        1. Michael Williams Avatar

id love to see any photo you take of that! 🙂

These life-changes as we mature are beautiful, aren’t they?

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

they really are Sharon. i know it’s a progression but boy do i wish with all my heart i knew this as a younger person.

This: “My life must gracefully wind down with an unending line of natural photos or video (vidjya lol) resonating a quiet, dignified gratitude for everything my eyes and lenses witness.”

Yes. Such a lovely epiphany, Mike!

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

thank you Lori! i bet i would see baskets of that type of natural beauty in the UP!

  11. justrojie Avatar

i used to be about the aesthetics too on ig but now i’m too lazy lol!

      hehehe 😀

I have never been a big Instagram fan, or any other photo social platform. Now, a photo tied to a story, it’s powerful and I’m all for it. Keep protecting that peace, my friend.

    1. Michael Williams Avatar

thanks Edward. i’ll tell you…one of the things i do think about is that i don’t want this site to become too many photos because then it becomes Instagram. and as such making sure that there is a compelling story behind the photo is – i believe – where the balance can land. great call!

      1. Edward Ortiz Avatar

You’re welcome, and absolutely. Besides, you might run out of space on WP, and paying for additional storage is not good. There are a lot of bloggers who do a great job of adding an occasional photo to support a poem or story. It can be very powerful in some cases.

        1. Michael Williams Avatar

I don’t know if you pay for a plan here Edward but I do for certain formatting needs. if you ever run out of photo space here don’t let it be the defining reason to pay for an upgrade. the media storage premium here is not price efficient in my opinion.

          1. Edward Ortiz Avatar

I pay for my plan, but if I ever run out of space, I know I can delete a bunch of photos without affecting the content of those posts.

My 35mm camera is sitting under my desk and I desperately want to bring it back into the light. I wish my IPhone wasn’t so handy and good.

haha i know right? convenience really trumps alot of things!
